Why People Love to Watch Baseball
Baseball has been an American staple for well over 100 years and for a significant portion of that period it could be said that nothing was more American than baseball. Unfortunately, despite that fact that its origins are deeply rooted in American history the sport of baseball has still not found a way to compete with basketball and football for the hearts of Americans. There was a time when baseball was the pinnacle of sportsmanship, competition and entertainment in America but that role was usurped by basketball and football many decades ago. Today, baseball still has a loyal following and is one of the three most popular sports in America.
According to myp2p baseball, people love to watch baseball simply because it allows them to be a part of one of the most legendary aspects of American history. Watching and playing baseball is intrinsically American and for some going to a baseball game is akin to an act of patriotism. There are not many things that have survived intact from the end of the 19th century, the world we live in has changed drastically since then and keeps changing every day, but the one holdover that Americans have is baseball. Those that watch baseball often choose to do so because it connects them to a simpler and perhaps more pure time when people were still using horses to get around and the telegraph was the fastest method of communication. Simply put, baseball feeds on the nostalgia that many Americans have for “the good ole days.” There isn’t much that is more American than going to the ballpark with family or friends on a warm Sunday afternoon to and having a few hot dogs and a soda while watching your team compete on the diamond. It might not be the most exciting sport, but people still love to watch baseball.
Some argue that baseball has declined in popularity because it isn’t as exciting as football and basketball, which have near constant action, but people that love to watch baseball will be the first to point out that there is always something to watch during a game if you can truly appreciate the sport. Myp2p baseball may not feature hard hitting linebackers or slam dunking power forwards but what is does feature are subtle strategy and a display of skill that is easy to overlook. So much of a player’s performance in basketball and football is dependent on how those around him do their job but in baseball when a player has the ball in their hands or speeding towards their bat they are the only ones that dictate the outcome of a play or even an entire game. Baseball in large part, while a team sport, is based largely on individual performances. To an extent, it is these individuals and their legacies, more than anything else that continues to draw people in to watch baseball year after year.
Baseball enjoyed one of its most popular periods in the last 20 years in 1998 when Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa were in a race to see who could break the single season home run record held by Roger Maris. All season people tuned in to watch baseball in hopes that they would get a chance to see McGwire or Sosa hit a home run. As they got closer to breaking the record more and more people tuned in to watch baseball than ever before. It is these individual performances that are able to drive a sport like baseball in an era when people want excitement and high scores when they sit down to watch a sport. Today, the sport of baseball is dominated by the players that can bring that excitement to the table, players that have the ability to swing for the fences every time they come to the plate. Over the last decade or so professional baseball has intentionally tried to change the game in order to get higher scores and make it more exciting for a public that seems to be obsessed by scoring points. The types of bats that are used were made so that they could get more distance and some even say that the baseballs have even been changed to allow them to travel farther.
Though it isn’t the first reason that pops into the minds of most when asked why people love to watch baseball star power is definitely one of the most important driving forces behind the sport. Baseball is filled to the brim with elite players that made a difference not only on the diamond but in society as well and it is these players that drive many people to watch baseball throughout their lives. The National Baseball Hall of Fame is perhaps the most prestigious hall of fame not only in the United States but in the entire world. It features players such as Hank Aaron and Jackie Robinson, who almost single handedly broke the color barrier in professional baseball and helped to usher in a new era of race relations in the United States. It also features greats such as Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle and Shoeless Joe Jackson; men that served as childhood heroes for generations of Americans. Today, baseball is dominated by greats such as Albert Pujols, Derek Jeter and Roy Halladay and while they may not be built in the same mold as the heroes from generations past it is these stars that continue to be a major reason why people love to watch baseball with myp2p.
